Trust me, I WILL not take it for granted when things are not going so well, but right now, the biking here is SO GOOD. There are bike lanes and bike ROADS and bike signage and bike shops and bike-inner-tube-vending machines and.....no surprise here...there are just bicycles EVERYWHERE. Everyone rides bike here. Grannies and kids and moms and businessmen and hippies and gorgous women in fashionable butter yellow silk tunics, white pants and black patent leather heels.

Bill and I agree that just about anyone could bike tour here, and indeed we are on the younger end of the age spectrum, although we have even seen kids loaded up and touring with their family. But mostly we are amazed by the sheer number of people touring.

The main routes are mostly paved, flat bike-only paths with good directional signage, and a charming village every 5 km for nourishment. The biggest challenge has been that there are sometimes TOO MANY bike routes to choose from, and it feels like sometimes we end up spending as much time navigating as riding. Itīs been interesting checking out the varous routes, with their various surfaces (pavement, gravel, dirt, paving stones to name a few) and their various landscapes (rural country lanes, forests, tiny hamlets) and the various degrees of in-directness (there is not a straight section of road for more than 1 km here!)

But as the saying goes, not all who wander are lost, and the next town is never more than a few km away, and always offers up a charming vista. Where water towers guided us to towns in the midwest, 13th century church steeples guide us here. Between the Bavarian timbers, red tile roofs, windowsill flower boxes, and cobblestone streets, even Bill is starting to overuse the word cute.
