After 2 whole days in Chile, we were compelled ( by fate and logistics and climate change and our airline ticket) to head for the hills of Argentina. And while they are stunning in their stark beauty, the ¨hiilllls aaaaaarrrrre noooooottttt alllliiiive.¨

The route from San Pedro de Atacma to Argentina was one of the most remote and barren expanses of desert that I have ever seen. Throughout the 10-hour bus ride the desert morphed from 6000 foot peaks of scree and cinder volcanoes, to wind loaded golden sand dunes, to hills inversely buttressed with the effects of erosion, to sparkling expanses of sand flats. But desert it was always.

Because of a slight delay along the way (caused by one passenger with a VERY expired passport) we arrived at 11:00 pm. Fortunately for us, we had arrived in Argentina, where fine dining just gets going at 10 or 10:30 pm. We enjoyed the best meat and wine of the trip over our 2 hour meal, which we judge to be short by local standards.

So while we are very sad to have missed so much of Chile (98% of it to be exact), we are not suffering in Argentina!
