After exploring the market for the morning, we set out for the hills (Bill can only take so much shopping before he needs an airing out). Louisa had read in her guidebook about a magical tree that stood in mystical solitude at the top of a hill outside of town. So, we set out after lunch to find El Lechero.
We walked for about 3 or 4 miles, following the road up from the residential outskirts of town, into rural settlements with lots of eucalyptus shading the way. The first couple miles the road was cobbled, like most of the streets and roads in the area (an amazing feat when you think about it). Our feet were actually grateful when the cobbles eventually gave way to soft dirt and we were in rural farmland.
After climbing up (then down) the wrong hill, we finally found El Lechero. With dramatic clounds overhead in the slanting afternoon sun, it truly had a mysitcal air.
We were thrilled to see a truck heading back to town as we started the long walk back to Otavalo. The driver was kind to give us a lift, especially with dark clouds moving in. GRACIAS, amigo!
