, Sihanoukville,
Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Leaving Kep at 10:30 we arrived at Sihanoukville at 14:30, so again 1 hour later than foreseen, in fact I figured out that if we do more than 30 km an hour average it's a miracle ;-)
Anyways, this time we had some flemish people in our mini van so started talking to them. A girl next to me was doing her end training "stage" of University to get her degree in medicine in Phnom Penh and in some small down in the north. Very interesting conversation and pretty clear that it's not a good idea to get sick to far from Phnom Penh ! One's we arrived we got a motor bike and started looking for a place to stay which turned out not to be that easy, most of them were fully booked others real and I mean real scruffy. So we drove around for about an hour but no luck. The weather for the moment is a little heavy and the sky closed which made it very damp and warm, time was ticking away and the sun was going down, we needed a quick break and some luck !
At the end we found a good room in an area that felt like how Pattaya must have been end of the sixties when it all started with the Americans being flown in from the battlefield to blow of some steam. Little bars and restaurants on sandy streets (reminds me also how to Wild West must have been). Fun for a bit but after seeing the average age of the men with young girls we thought we'd move to another area tomorrow. We had a real cheap but good dinner in a cute place with a nice owner just in front of our guesthouse and walked around a bit after that until we got fed up and went to our room.

We took our bike after breakfast and drove to another side of town with a nicer beach and lots of restaurants, café's and guesthouses. It took a while to find one we liked and which had a free room but at the end we found one. So now we're at Serendipity beach and I think we'll stay here for a few days. The beach is quite nice and in the evening it's really lively here, little lights everywhere and the restaurants along the beach are really cute. It all looks better at night 'cause to be honest Cambodia in general is less clean than Thailand and all this disappears at night :-)

After getting up we walked to the beach to have breakfast in front of the sea which is great and still quiet. Today there's lots of wind and the water agitated which I both love. (Must be 'cause I lived so long at the northern coast and I'm used to it).
Ended up to be a great day, really enjoying the beach and the sun and wind, we even got browner if that's even possible ;-)
In the evening we went to Enzo, who has a restaurant/bar on the beach to whom we have been send by Luca. We had arranged last night that he would prepare us crab, so we went there around 8. It was and Andrea agrees the best prepared crab that we ever had. Really delicious and a lot of it and for a reasonable price. This area is actually well known for crab, also Kep but there we didn't have the occasion. After this great meal we walked around, had another drink and went back to the guesthouse. It's in fact not such a good idea to go to sleep too late (unless you drink yourself senseless and sleep through everything afterwards :-) ) as in the morning noise starts pretty early. First you might have some stupid cock singing when the sun comes up (trying to tell him I would eat him didn't help ) and around 7 local people really start to work and move everything.

Getting up and after breakfast we had a few things to do on internet like making a payment, and find a room in Koh Kong, our next destination on the way back to Thailand. Than we had to get the bus tickets to get there on the 2nd, we found out it was another trip of around 5 hours. We got the tickets and booked a hotel which looked fun on the river, we'll see ....
Than to the beach were we stayed all day until sunset, really a nice moment of the day and I'm actually writing this while sunset is about 15 minutes away. Let me take a picture with my banana shake :-)
We had a big bowl of chicken soup with vegetables at the Monkey republic guesthouse/restaurant which is a real popular place. The soup tasted very good but was really spicy because of the quantity of black pepper (another speciality from this region with which they make miammi sauces like the one we had on our crab). After that we definitely needed a few drinks. :-)

1st of February
We're half way our trip and enjoying it !
