Less than one week left until Mike and I take off for the "land of the long white cloud.   I'm still in the research and planning phase but the trip is approaching very quickly.  I depart from Sacramento International around 5:00 p.m. on August 1st and meet up with Mike at LAX.  Our flight leaves from LAX at 9:05 p.m. on August 1st and we arrive in Auckland, New Zealand at 4:45 a.m. August 3rd (9:45 a.m. August 2nd PST).  Yes, that means that we don't exist on August 2nd, or at least we don't exist for long as we cross the International Date Line.  I'll try and update this blog as often as we have internet access during the trip.

Note- I've used the word "Kiwi" now for months and my wife tells me that most people have no idea what this means or they assume I'm referring to the kiwifruit.  Since I'm sure I will use this term throughout this blog I thought I would explain.

Kiwi is the nickname used internationally for people from New Zealand, as well as being a relatively common self-reference. The name derives from the kiwi, a flightless bird which is native to, and the national symbol of, New Zealand.

Hi David & bro!
Hope you both enjoy the start of your big adventure to Kiwiland! The natives are truly very friendly (at least what I have experienced). Try to get on their time as soon as possible it will make your jet lag better. I just pulled a 13 hour trip to Argentina this year and sleep is what saved the trip. So do what you can to sleep while on the plane. Wishing you both a speedy safe trip there! Enjoy! Oh yeah...they don't serve ice in your soda there so if you want it cold you will have to ask for ice! They will look at you a bit odd but what the heck you are a tourist right!
Keep us posted so we can follow along with you!
