We arrived in Singapore airport at 3am and knew we wouldn't be able to get into the hostel until 9am so we hung around the airport for a while and when the light rail system started running at 6am we took one of them out to the hostel. We got there around 6:30 and it was all locked up so we spent the next couple of hours in an internet cafe then, finally at 9am, we got into the hostel only to be told that our room wouldn't be ready until 2pm. So we just waled round the area for a while, found a huge electronics shopping mall and, as Lydia wanted a new camera for her birthday, spent some time looking for the model she wanted. Went back to the hostel and Lydia fell asleep on the sofa then when we got our room (the most expensive room of the whole trip so far) we slept for most of the afternoon.
Next morning we went back to the electronics shopping mall and despite only looking for a new camera, ended up buying a new laptop too. We've been saying since we started traveling that we'd love to have a nice small lightweight laptop to have with us and when we saw one for 340 Euro in the electronics mall, we couldn't resist. Lydia got her new super zoom camera too and we spent the rest of the afternoon playing with our new toys.
Later on that day in the hostel there was a band playing in the beer garden so we sat out there and got chatting to three really nice Dutch people who were working on a project for Shell oil in Singapore. Later on we went for a lovely Indian dinner with two girls from Cork, one of whom was the singer in the band and lives in Singapore teaching drama to kids.
Lydia didn't like the lightshow, think it was a bit childish for her but I thought is was great especially when the sleeping Lord of Fire got his powers back and when the guy woke up the sleeping princess with his singing!
The next day was Lydia's birthday and we decided we'd go to the zoo but Lydia wasn't feeling too well and the zoo was a good distance out of the city so we put a picnic together and went to sit in a park for the afternoon, cake was a bit of a disaster, didn't know it was made from chocolate moose when I bought it and it kind of melted! She said it still tasted good though! We saw Raffles Hotel too, the famous hotel where the Singapore Sling was invented, looked very swanky but we didn't go in because we heard the Singapore Sling cost $18 and the don't even make it in front of you just squirt it from a pipe, so we just took a picture from the outside!
