A very early start to catch our flight London Gatwick - Krakow , Poland
21/2 hour flight .
Flying over Krakow was so interesting and not at all as i thought it would be - very green with a lot of farmland and though the 2nd largest city after Warsaw didn't look that big - 1.2 million
A lot of identical high rise box like apartment blocks seem to be scattered around the outskirts - look like were built in the communist era .
Driving into the city we saw a completely different scene with some beautiful big homes with quite unique designs and very steep roofs probably for the snow - and obviously an affluent area
How amazing is the internet - all bookings done months ago and there was the guy from our apartments to meet us - which saved a lot of time in a country where the signs and language are so very foreign to read let alone pronounce
Our accommodation ( Antique apartments) is just off the main square in the Old City - the old city is the original city from the 10th century which was surrounded by a wall and moat but this was destroyed in the 18th century and the moats filled in for health reasons - the wall was replaced in the 19 th century by a green belt of trees - so these trees are now over 100 years old .
So after a couple of hours of wandering and finding our bearings we went on a 3 hour guided walking tour of the old city which was so interesting - so many varying bits of architecture as so much has been destroyed of polish buildings over the centuries so the rebuilding has taken place over many different eras , Romanism, gothic' baroque, renaissance
This evening we went to an hour classical concert of a quartet in this tiny church - St Adalberts church - in the centre of the market square - it was wonderful
Dinner was so good - there are many many eating places - chairs outside all over the edges of the square - all very good polish food and so cheap
Big day tomorrow - Auschwitz tour
