Given the comfortable and roomy seat, I was able to get 5-6 hours sleep on the flight, waking up at 8 a.m. Eastern time. We landed without delay. Immigration, luggage claim, and customs were pretty quick. My suitcase came out reasonably promptly.
I got my rental car and drove to Lexy & Sandy's house.
Suka and I had discussed when I would return. My ticket would have cost three times as much to come back Jan 2, 3, or 4. Coming back on Dec. 31 saved me another $300, which could have gone either way. When I told Suka that flying back on the 31st would get me Platinum status, she asked what that meant. When I told her that it would get us both confirmed upgrades several days in advance once she got to the States (Gold companions only get upgraded at the gate), she agreed that we should save the money and get the Platinum status.
Since I was going to be in Detroit on New Year's Eve, I checked the prices to lay over for a day. It turns out that saved me another $50 on the flight cost. I'll never understand airline pricing, but I took the opportunity to spend the night with friends.
