It really feels like the end of the earth down here (Fin del Mundo). And I feel completely foreign, as most people in Ushuaia speak little or no English, and all I can say is ola (Hello), muchos gracia (thanks very much) and este (east). The latter is because I seem to be heading east every time I am asking for directions....I guess I better figure out what west is for the way back!! (And thanks to the handy Spanish/English translator Robin gave me, I think I can handle that!)
So far I have met only a few of the other travellers. A couple of Austrailians, one Brit and a lady from Toronto (go figure). She has been on this trip before, and liked it so much this is her second go īround. Thats a good sign!
Right now, Iīs entering this update from an internet cafe in the main part of Ushuaia. Its laid out at the southern foot of a mountain range, so the incline from the port to the hotel is very steep. (Many of the streets stop and become staircases). After checking into the hotel last night, I went down to a restaurant recommended in the travellers guidebook, Tante Sara (I think aunt Sara..just a guess). There was an English football came on TV (dubbed in Spanish) and ordered the recommended king crab ravioli and a half bottle (seriously Lori - just a HALF!) of the local wine. The wine loverīs choice seems to be anything from Mendoza region (I tried the 2005 Malbec, its got a serious bite like a Shiraz, but doesn't linger....and no headache the next morning!)
I also forgot to mention that in Argentina, people follow the 24 hour clock.
In any event, I have managed to make my way to all the right places on this trip (which is quite a feat since until today I have been on my own and have met relatively few English speakers). But I am pretty pumped seeing the ship docked in the harbour. I am sure Ill have a great time. And with any luck, this little seasickness patch behind my ear will keep me from spending most of the next 3 days (while we are crossing the Beagle Channel from Tierra del Fuego to Antarctica) in the toilet!
I still am not able to upload my pictures from Buenos Aires (Jan 1/2) or those I took in Ushuaia (Jan 2/3). But as soon as I find a PC that gives me access to the USB port, Ill be in business. There are a few really good ones, like the snapshot of the southern skyline where the 24 hour daylight can be seen just over the mountains at midnight.
For not, thatīs it. I,ll be boarding in a few hours, so if the ship has an internet connection, Ill be updating again tomorrow. Otherwise, itīll be 9 days from now.
PS- if you want to, you can sign the guestbook (theres a URL link in the sign-in page) and let me know you're reading. I see several visits, so Iīm glad you're keeping an eye on my progress!
Talk to you soon,
Shawn

Hello Shawn!!
Greetings from my virtual office, where you think you can hide, really you cannot.
It has been so much fun reading your updates. I cannot wait to see your photos, they sound amazing.
Things in Toronto are what you would call, fine. Nothing like coming back to work on the first Tuesday of 2006. I'd much rather be eating and relaxing with no stresses, but the mortgage needs to covered.
I remember when I was in Mexico I went deep sea fishing and the waves were nasty.....and all I can say is the motion patch worked beautifully so I can only hope that you have a happy, no throwing up allowed unless booze related, trip.
Take care for now.

Good Morning!
I thought I would just send a note to let you know that I have been following checking every day as soon as I get into the office. It has become part of the morning start up routine with the laptop, right after checking email!
Sounds like you have been having a great time so far, although the dog dirt part didn't sound like much fun! You could have done that here!
You should be on the ship now and with all of your new compadres, hope they are a lively group! Have fun and talk soon.
Craig
