Valparaiso, mon amour.

We arrived yesterday afternoon after taking a perfectly planned bus ride from Santiago. We then got in a cab and went on a search for the perfect hostel. 5 elaborate tours later, we ended up in Patiperro - a charming bed and breakfast that sits on one of the steepest hills in the city. A hostel review online described Patiperro as "grandma's house" ... The floors creak when you take a breath in, breakfast is served on a long wooden table, and there is a beautiful antique-like rug that lines the skinny hallways.  There is certainly a welcoming, home-like feeling that one gets the second they walk inside.

Anyway, our first day in Valparaiso was just as special as our first experience in the hostel. Lunch was at an adorable french bistro called desayundo - we shared a panini and a "tarte", and oh man, the desserts were pretty fabulous as well. We then wandered the streets, admired the seemingly endless murals that line the colorful mansions, and eventually made our way down to el puerto (the port).  Long story short, we ended up on a boat with Pablo and a bottle of vino to watch the sunset over Valparaiso and Vina. The most surprising part of this trip were sea lions who decided to join us for our late afternoon cocktail hour. (See the pictures... Pretty cool stuff!).

Anyway, things started to get interesting at dinner. Per the suggestion of Alejandro (our hostel owner), we ended up at Vinilo, a cafe-restaurant that seriously makes our taste buds go wild. We enjoyed a delicious glass of wine, shared some traditional Chilean food (Pembre, roasted tomato something..., and some special fish). We also spent some time getting to know the chef, Gonzalo, who managed to convince us to meet him in his kitchen the next morning at 930 am. 2 American girls cooking Chilean food with a 36 year old professional chef in one of the hottest restaurants in town... What could be better.

Buenos Noches.
