We finally head out and drive down the beach toward Manteo, our favorite place. We aren't sure where we want to go for lunch yet, so we research a few restaurants and drive down to the end of Roanoke Island to visit the Lost Colony museum. Last year when when we were here we went to the Lost Colony drama, but the museum was closed. Now it was open and we go through it and get to talk to one of the actors in the play. We drive by Andy Griffith's driveway and notice the gate to his estate is open. It has always been closed when we drove by before. We drive to the Manteo waterfront and plan to come back here later today to walk and shop.
Art has been wanting an "all you can eat seafood" buffet since we were in California. We never found one like we have on the east coast. We decide to go to Saint George's Seafood Buffet. Although more expensive than some, the food there is always awesome (we usually go to the one in Myrtle Beach). We aren't disappointed and we enjoy our late lunch/early dinner. We are there a while because we love the all you can eat crab legs. I don't think we need dinner now!
We stop at a few shops and head back to the hotel to enjoy the beach for the afternoon. It is not crowded here at the beach, which is so nice, and we plan to take a walk along the beach later. It is nice just to sit and watch the waves and boats and people there.
As the temperatures cool down a bit from the hot day, we head back to Manteo. This is my very favorite place to visit and walk at the Outer Banks. There is a wonderful waterfront here with a boardwalk that goes along Shallowbag bay. It has been pretty warm today, but now it is later in the day so it is cool enough to get out and enjoy the walk. The boardwalk here extends a long way along the bay and runs along marshland, marina and shops.
Finally it begins to get dark and we leave and drive down the Outer Banks highway, listening to music on Pandora radio and watching the lightening show among the clouds way out over the ocean. Of course we stop for ice cream. We finally make it back to our hotel and head down to walk along the beach for a short walk.
We are feeling somewhat sad as it is the last night of our trip. We are so thankful and amazed that we actually drove coast to coast! We plan to spend a little more time here tomorrow enjoying this beautiful area before we head back to Raleigh in the afternoon to pick up our car and dog and visit with our daughter.
