We ALMOST made it. We had the coordinates for the last destination in and ready to go, but we didn't have time to run there, return the GPS, and make it back to the train station, so we had to abandon our quest. It may have worked if we hadn't spent a good chunk of our time trying to figure out how to use the GPS (it had a weird compass that hated us), and doing the math problems wrong because in America a period signifies a decimal
It was fun to try to puzzle out anyway!
So we got to Berlin in the afternoon and checked into the same hostel, this time in a double room which was, again, really nice. We made a very important fashion decision for Joy at the Tausche store in Friedrichshain, then had some delicious eis (ice cream) while we walked around. They had a quark and rhubarb flavor that was so yummy and summary!
Then, we headed down the Unter den Linden, a wide street with lots of touristy shops, embassies, and a promenade, toward the Brandenburg Gate. The Gate was one of the city entrances to Berlin and was meant to lead down the boulevard of linden trees and to the palace of the Prussian monarchs. After walking through, we passed through the Tiergarten, which means "Animal Garden" and was the hunting ground for the monarchs. Just a block away from the Brandenburg Gate is the Reichstag, the German Parliament Building, which sat empty for many years as it was located in no man's land prior to reunification. Our walk continued back past the gate. The former location of the Berlin Wall is marked on the pavement running through the middle of the street. Conveniently, the street was closed to traffic for the Walpurgissnacht (May Day..but creepier) festival, so we got to stand with one foot on each side of the wall. Then we headed to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which is one of the cooler monuments I've ever seen. After that, we walked to the Sony Center to see The Avengers, and that was the perfect cherry on top of a great Berlin visit!
