Flag of Sri Lanka  ,
Tuesday, August 2, 2005

Last week I was up the east coast, in a town called Batticaloa checking out some of the smaller and local NGO’s.  The area is just wiped…. The scale is so massive you can’t even see where to begin (check out a few photos I took).  We did meet with some fantastic people though who are doin their best to help out.  Despite the devastation, it is still a beautiful place – oh and I got to see my first sunrise!! Well we did arrive at 4.30am so there was no point goin to bed! I did get up for sunrise another morning to do some of my photography course but alas the clouds came and hid the beautiful sky I was wanting…. Sods law strikes again!  It was very surreal sitting on a beautiful beach with bits of houses all around you.

The area has a strong Sri Lankan Army presence – and err go a strong Tiger presence too (though I didn’t see any) – Soldiers walking about everywhere with guns and blockades and checkpoints… though sayin that they all wanted to wave and say hello! Not at all intimidating… though I suspect that is the joy of being a western woman in this place.

Other than that, wot have I been doin?? Wot I cry. Well mostly I have been attached to various computers doin this co-ordination business for VSL (the folk I am volunteering with) and meeting NGO’s and volunteers, and goin to meetings, and going to sites where volunteers are, and more computer stuff, and more computer stuff.  Haven’t really had much time for myself yet but its all good :o)

Ohh I got a house! Yes I am renting with another volunteer – a three bedroom place with kitchen, en-suite bathrooms, and a wee garden to boot. It’s close to the main town so not so many beautiful views (there were some far nicer and far cheaper places in the jungle, but transport to and from was a problem).  Well it’s costing me 87 for 3 months rent so I can’t complain!! I sure we are payin over the odds still….. Oh we got a kitchen too – well a gas hob, a kettle, utensils, and a fridge – so once we get some food in we will save even more money.

Talking of food – I have put on weight – damn curries three times a day! But they are oh so yummy – wot am I to do?  I think its cuz the food is so oily, and cuz u get soo much and you know how I hate to waste food….. ahh sweet sweet pie of joy…..
