Palawan
Entry 65 of 142 | show all | print this entry |
Day 3 we decided we'd had enough of Manila, its the dirtiest asian city i've seen and i've been to some shockers! We got a 24hr boat to Palawan, a big island in the Southwest of the phillipines (mum, I may have told u its in the north, sorry i'm v tired). Luckily the boat company had a website so we saw a photo of the economy bunks before we brought a ticket and decided to spend the extra 2 pounds to go ina 4 bed cabin with air con and bed linen. I was a bit worried about the boat but it was ok, it was massive which didn't help the feeling that we were boarding the titanic! We did manage to catch the boat on its last voyage before it has a complete refurb which I thought was clever of us. One of the funniest things was the constant prayers which didn't help our nerves, and after a good hour of prayers over the intercom they had a show in the didning hall which featured raunchy drag queens and everyone brought their kids to watch!
Today we got up at 5.30 to geta 7am bus to Sabang, the bus turned out to be a jeepney and didn't leave til 7.50 but they did give us a cup of coffee while we waited, one puncture and 3 hrs later we arrived in Sabang where we went on a boat ride on an underground river. It wasn't the "unmissable attraction" it was touted as but it was good in a spooky, Goonies kind of way. We then got the same jeepney back, another puncture, another 3 hrs of bumpy roads and we were back in Puerto Princesa, the capital of the island. tommorow we get to do a 5 hr bus to our next stop, hopefully the road will be paved!
the food over here is pretty shocking, nothing like thai or Malaysian, we were excited about something called pinakbet, a mix of vegetables like pumpkin, green beans, ocre and eggplant but we tried it last night and it is made with tons of shrimp paste which tastes like fishfood! We found a vegetarian restaurant this afternoon so we have just stuffed ourselves, we ordered 3 dishes each, on the boat we lived on crisps and oreos having decided against the fish head and rice they served for dinner! Still theres always Jollibee, the national fast food chain, we went in there to see what it was like and the staff yell, Hello, Welcome and are eo super smiley that I think they must put something in the staff dinner.
