After all the luxury of our trip to the Whitsundays it was back to reality with an overnight bus ride to Cairns. As usual we sat near the weirdos, this time hillbillies that smelt like a farmyard and shovelled crisps down their throats all night!

We had a good time in Cairns despite the crew on our boat telling us it was a dive. It has a big salt water lagoon because u can't swim in the sea in summer because of the nasty box jellyfish. It was gorgeous, clear water, a "horizon" design so u can see the sea as u swim and lots of grassy spaces to relax, and its all free. Theres been a lot of money spent around this area of town and we really enjoyed it. A trip to the barrier reef was a must for cairns and when we found out it was the normal price on christmas day we signed straight up! We did one of the more expensive trips so that we could go to the outer reef and it was worth every penny. My only complaint was that Dean snorkelled and I payed a bit more to dive and Dean saw more than me, including 2 sharks and a turtle! I did see a huge potato cod tho (they do look like a potato!) which was something I really wanted to see so I was happy. We ate tons on the boat cos we thoght everything would be shut when we got back and we wouldn't get a dinner, but nearly everything was open so we ate again, the usual xmas overeating, some things never cahnge!
