June 29, 2009

Dear Friends,

We hope this letter finds you well.

We want to update you on the further adventures of the Sprout family and to enlist your prayer support.

WHAT ARE THE SPROUTS UP TO?:  On June 29th, our family will fly to Dublin, Ireland, rest for a few days, and then head to Cork, Ireland to begin a 10 day ministry aboard the ship, Logos Hope, part of the ministry of Operation Mobilization (www.om.org) on July 3rd-12th.

OM's two ships in their ministry fleet, Logos Hope and Doulos, have been commissioned since 1970 and 1979, respectively, to bring knowledge, aid, and the hope of Jesus to ports around the world. Volunteers from around the world serve on their ships and no small part of the excitement we have to serve aboard Logos Hope is working along side a multinational, Kingdom community.

We will be serving with Andy and Melody West, missionaries of Grace Community Church (our sending church), who live and work aboard Logos Hope, along with their kids, Adelaide, Kelsey, and Andrew.   Andy is the Chief Steward and much of our time aboard will be spent in the galley.

INFORMATION ABOUT LOGOS HOPE AND OPERATION MOBILIZATION:  "Whether captain or cook, administrators or bookshop staff, all crew and staff are dedicated volunteers" (www.logoshope.org). Currently, OM needs approximately 300 volunteers to fully staff their ship and accomplish their objectives. Since 1970, OM’s ships have been welcomed by 142 nations, including China, Russia, Sudan, and Lebanon, and have welcomed over 37 million people onboard.  Logos Hope’s purpose is threefold:

1) bring knowledge, through an extensive floating book fair.  For many, the ship provides their only access to quality books, from cookbooks to car manuals to children’s novels.  The book fairs offer significant, practical means to improve people’s lives, particularly where access to books is limited or even non-existent.

2) bring help, by providing aid to communities in need. OM hopes to alleviate immediate needs as well as bring long-term change to each community it serves.  Their “efforts include constructing orphanages, building shelters for victims of natural disasters, and distributing medical aid, food, and supplies.”    Check out www.om.org/resource/r14619 for more on their helping ministry.

3) bring hope, by sharing the message of reconciliation with God through Jesus to each port. OM also partners with local churches to train and equip their members through onboard conferences and training programs.

WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?:  whatever we are asked to do, whether that is prayer walking in Cork, serving meals, setting up for conferences, or staffing the book store.

PLEASE PRAY:  We would so appreciate your prayers for this ministry. We are looking for a team to pray for us daily.  How can you pray? Please pray:

1. that everything we do or say, we do in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to the Father through him (Colossians 3:17, 23).

2. that we work as a cohesive, unified team, as a family, and with the staff aboard ship; that we each exercise our gifts in love, for each other and for the people we serve (1 Corinthians 13: 4-7).

3. that God provide health, safety and protection as we travel, especially as we drive on the “wrong” side of the road.

4. that we have lots of opportunities to proclaim and demonstrate the Gospel.

5. that God’s kingdom come and his will be done, in Cork, Ireland, just as it is in heaven (Matthew 5:10).

Thanks for taking the time to read this and for taking the time to pray.  We appreciate you and your friendship and ministry to us.  Thanks!

The Sprout family: Melanie, Jeff, Stephen, Sam, Silas, and Jamie
