Belgrade to Golubnac
Distance: 145km
Best bit: Sunset on Danube
Worst bit: fear
Animals: huge mushroom
It is hard to describe how it felt driving out in the Belgrade early morning traffic. If you have seen the movie, Speed, a bit like being selotaped to the front of the runaway bus. In other words, fear!
However, every cloud has its silver lining on this holiday, and it wasnt long before the traffic melted away and I could stick the helmet on the rear rack and put on the sun tan lotion.
In the afternoon I had one of those great holiday conversations that only occur when (a) you are crap at the local language and (b) people really want to help you but are crap at your language. It is not a good mix! I was trying to find the tourist info office so I could see if there was any chance of making it over to some ruins before sunset on teh bus. I approached a friendly looking lady walking towards me. Conversation ran a bit as follows:
hello do you speak English
yes, yes, speaky speaky
oh, er could you tell me where the tourist information office is please?
ah hello. You want bed?
No , thank you. I just want the tourist information office
Ah.... you want Hotel.
No, thank you, just the office.
Oh, no bed, you want camping?
Nooo... just the office
Ah you lost, you need map?
I have a good map, thank you, I just need....
Ah my friend help you with map.
But....
[at this point, the ice cream seller is willingly dragged away from her kiosk to assist]
Hello, you want hotel?
And so it continued until I managed to cycle away...
