Eagles Nest
Distance: 0km
Best bit: exploring the Nazi Mountain Bunkers
Worst bit: not eating today until about 6pm!
(photos to follow when I am at a decent site!)
Took the bus to Obersalzberg, Hitlers Southern HQ and site of the famous Eagles Nest. The skies were a clear rich blue and the sun was hot. The mountain peaks still had thick snow cover, so the contrast with the lush green valleys was startling. The museum itself (Oberservatory) was small but fascinating. Visitors are able to explore a small section of the underground labarynth of passages the Nazis built. The exhibits focused mostly on the holocaust (I would have liked more information on the history of the site) but I suppose there are still many people who need to be educated on the worst war time atrocities
I spent the afternoon back in town, soaking up the sun on teh riverīs edge and padding the ancient streets. I passed up on the chance to enter any of the numerous historic buildings. Perhaps I missed out but I was happy taking it slow and giving my legs a break.
Have chatted to a few interesting people this weekend, and at least one very strange one. The hostel is (predictably) full of Australian backpackers and they are an open and chatty crowd.
You still have to keep your wits about you in this town although it is generally safe. One fellow tried to charge me Euros 4.60 for three elderly bananas. He was not chuffed when I handed them back and said "no thanks mate, not at that price!"
