Day 10: Enforced rest day Strasbourg
Stuck in Strasbourg due to lightning and heavy showers. Swarms of locusts will probably turn up tomorrow.
Best bit: Hotel served a big pig breakfast/I found a gothic swimming pool (lucky I packed me trunks)/lots of lovely buildings to look at
Worst bit: rain rain rain
I have come to realise that very occasionally on this trip I will have a bad day/moment. I am told I write about a lot of these, or moan about them to friends in texts, but maybe I am a natural whinger! Anyway, I have recorded my top tips below for beating the cycling holiday blues and intend to apply them more sternly from now on:
Tip1
Tip2. Go shopping. I like this option. It's use, however, is limited in that (a) most of the time I am in the middle of nowhere and there are no shops, and (b) when there are shops, (i cant describe my excitement yesterday at discovering a Gallerie Lafayette next to my hotel) I only have 2 small panniers to store the shopping booty.
Tip3. Sing a song. This only works well when I am in the middle of nowhere and alone as my singing tends to scare people and animals, and occasionally, even myself. The exception is the happy cow I encountered on day 6 who didnt run away so obviously has good taste, but alas could not become a groupie as was too big to fit on the bike pannier. I always have a song of the week, the current one is of my own creation and is entitled "tra la la, I wish I had a car".
Tip4. Buy guide books/maps. This is my favourite option and works well when combined with Tip2. Although most guides are written in Flibbertigibbet French or German and the maps are the wrong scale, I can usually find enough to keep me inspired for the next leg. Today I bought one on Salzburg which contains tantalising details of the Sound of Music tour.....
So tomorrow, unless the weather is truly hideous, I am off in the general direction of Austria.....

. Have a large glass of wine. This works excellently. However; it does tend to impair my riding, and for some reason, I always feel bad again the next day.Tip2. Go shopping. I like this option. Top Tip
I must admit tip 1 seems like the most sensible. You're probably in Riesling country now. Enjoy!
