Best bit: walk around the historic fort
Worst bit: nothing bad today really
Apparently the WW2 General, Patton, described Verdun and its environs as a "nasty country where it rains every day and the whole wealth of the people consists in assorted manure piles", and the Rough Guide wasnt much more complementary. However, for me, Verdun was a good quiet spot to recharge my batteries and consider the road ahead. After a late breakfast I took a small automatic historical train into the depths of the forts WW1 tunnels. It was dark and chilly, rather than chilling, but definately of enough interest to merit the six euros entrance fee. I used the remainder of the day to tour the ramparts; rest my legs, catch up on email and type up a job application. Verdun never misses a chance to remind you that half a million men from five continents fought and died here senselessly a hundred years ago. However; despite this potential shadow, it proved to be a good place to fritter away a day.
