Day One
Start: Kennington, London
End: Boulogne Sur Mer, France
Distance cycled: 5km!
Caught the train from Charing X to Dover Priory - dont feel like i am cheating - have simply cycled Kent too many times! I found the one carriage that miracuously had a bike space. A fellow passenger seemed equally delighted to have found the toilet next to it. As she herded her family into their seats she exclaimed "I have found the loo - everything is going to be alright now!" I wish i were always that easily pleased...
The ferry people at speedferries.com appeared most happy to see me. They said I am one of the first cyclists to use the service. I replied that more would surely follow. And I hope they do. Only 15 quid, no Heathrow Airport style queues, no need for a bike box for carriage, journey is 50 mins and there is a well stocked bar.
Boulougne is not bike friendly, but I did get the ride the bike on top of the old city walls which was a total bonus. Hit it off with the receptionist at the hostel (yes, hostel) so she gave me a private room and let me take the bike in to bed with me. There is obviously some charm left in Lawrence the old dog. After cooking a bowl of pasta in the communual kitchen its lights out before the big ride I have planned for tomorrow.
