I'm having a break. I've earned it, I've been working hard. I'm off to Belize for a couple of weeks, so don't expect any updates on here until I'm back.
On Tuesday Ian Tibble got behind the wheel for the first time. He was disappointingly good and only found one kerb on the whole trip. He even ventured along the Esplanade, which had taken me a couple of drives to summon up the courage to do. He nearly got us our first parking ticket as we waited on the Esplanade, but luckily we only got moved on. I was chatting at the time to a bloke who had just told me that he had just come back from there and we would never get in to Sudan without ramps. Apparently there is no dock in Wadi Halfa and with our limited ground clearance, we wouldn't do it. We need some big, strong ramps then.
Ami has pulled out, much to a lot of people's annoyance. What makes it worse is that we now need someone to fill her space and they only have 2 1/2 months to raise the money, and they will need to commit immediately to stand any chance of getting a Sudan visa. It's a tall order for anyone. I tried straight away to contact Nadia by every means I could think of. No joy. Next on the list, Simon. I got hold of him but he started a new job a few weeks ago. He said if I had asked 3 weeks before he would definately have come.
I was hoping Ami was going to raise lots of money, but now I was just intent on filling the space with anyone that could possibly get close to raising the £500 minimum. The money is just not coming in as fast as I was hoping. Sponsorship possibilities have come to nothing and we are getting knocked back left, right and centre. By all accounts this was having a negative effect on Jim and Lucy who were down, like I was last week.
On a more positive note though, it now seems that most of the team are busy, active and looking to do things. Charli has a band night organised for 13th september now in Teignmouth and she's hoping to raise £1500 or so. The rugby tournament is taking shape, with 4 teams now apparently committed. I just need to find out about insurance for a 'bus pull'. the Oktoberfest is taking shape too. Even Bill is lining up a darts event. Ian is planning a quiz night and a sponsored row.
I was up the other night, unable to sleep (bus stuff whizzing around my brain the main problem), so I sat down and spent 3 or 4 hours sending out e-mails to various people, organisations and media outlets. this bore fruit the next day. Rugby World magazine are keen on doing an article on our forthcoming match. this is just a start. the Preston, Osmington and Sutton Poyntz Parish magazine also want an exclusive.
I've gone one better than this today. Wessex FM phoned me and I did a pre-recorded interview with them !
well, if that doesn't bring the sponsors in, nothing will.
