We have been asked by a number of people how we decided to make this trip so I thought it might be of interest to give a little background information. Carol and I were having lunch one day in late August in San Diego and we started talking about a trip to Puerto Vallarta, MX in January to visit our neighbors in St. Charles, IL. The plan was to drive down the BAJA to La Paz and then taking the ferry across to Mazatlan  and then to PV. After we had worn out our welcome we would reverse the route back to SD and then home to Chicago. Once back in Chicago we were then going to fly down to Lima, Peru - a place I have wanted to return to for a number of years - a spend a few months roaming around the area. All of the sudden Carol says why don't we just keep driving from PV down to Lima and as long as we are that far why not go all the way to Tierra del Fuego - Ushuaia. Additional conversation led us back up the East Coast of South America with a final side trip up the Amazon before heading home.
Two things stand out from the above paragraph ;one, not a great deal of thought was given to what we had decided  to do, and two, this is Carol's brain storm - I am innocent of coerceing my wife into this adventure. The motto for our trip is "The difference between and Adventure and an Ordeal is ATTITUDE". An appropriate bumper sticker will be attached to our vehicle.

Hi John and Carol
Two very quiet persons at rest in a lost part of the world (Ollioules, Provence) are excited to vibrate at the narrative of your experiences in Mexico, South America and further. We expect crocodiles, snakes, wild people ... and nice photos. Many kisses. Al + An
