A rainy old morning to match my mood. Slow and cold, we planned our next move, which clearly did NOT involve getting on the train with bikes for a ride out to the Attenkirchen beer festival. Besides which it was raining. Feeling bad that Seano hasn’t yet achieved his goal of going to a really truly German beer festival, but neither of us thought this a good idea for today. Back in to Marienplatz, and found a liitle café (not Starbucks, hooray!) with internet connection and better coffee. Settled in for a big catch up of blogging - always feel a little more at ease if we are at least a bit up to date with the travel diary
We had found in the Lonely Planet a place which had supposedly the best weisswurst in Munchen (Weisses Brauhaus), so thought that sounded quite appropriate for the next move. Got to the restaurant, and found a table and possibly the crankiest waitress in the whole of Germany. She had a permanent scowl fixed on her face, and when I asked for a glass of water (in German), she came back with “Wass ist wasser?” (What is water?)”. I thought it was quite clear, but then again… maybe not (have since found out that asking for a glass of water is not the done thing. Oh well). We scoured the extensive menu for weisswurst, which didn’t appear to be there. Not feeling at all game to ask the cranky waitress, we just ordered anything that ended in ‘wurst’ and see how we went. I ended up getting a sort of mixed platter including delicious sauerbraten (roast pork) and some ordinary sausages, and Seano ordered what we later found out to be spleen sausage - they were actually really nice. Pretty keen to leave (we were being actively glared at by cranky-pants; I didn’t want to ask where the toilets were, so went searching through the maze of rooms by myself - she watched me while I went and I am almost sure I heard an actual growl…). You can’t win them all I suppose.
Both feeling tired and a bit over it, we planned then to go and find some weisswurst to take home for dinner, and go back to Hans Bubi for an afternoon sleep (with the potential to come back onto town later - we told each other - yeah, right)
We wandered about a bit aimlessly and came upon the Stadtmuseum. Feeling less than enthused we dragged our leaden feet in and found that the museum housed a collection that told the story of Munich’s history and adjoining museum that showed a history of the Nazi’s in Munich - Nationalsozialismus in Munchen. The Stadtmuseum was a bit dry, although did like the sculptures of Morris Dancers from medieval times and some of the history of Munich, from a walled fortress town described as ignorant and insular to a modern arts city and then to the ‘Birthplace of the Movement’ referring to the Nazi’s and the political turmoil of the city in the years following the First World War (including a communist revolution….). The Nationalsozialismus in Munchen exhibition explored the dark Nazi past in more detail. The display hall was a windowless steel riveted hall with photos, letters, propaganda posters, uniforms, resistance papers and letters from concentration camp victims. It was quite powerful and gave a bit of an insight into how the National Socialists came to power
By the time we finished at the museums, it was after 5pm and we still didn’t have a weisswurst for dinner. So we decided to go for a walk along the main shopping mall, surely there is a little shop somewhere…No. We walked down past Karlsplatz, with its huge fountain and kids on bike riding through the mist. We kept going to the Hauptbahnhof (main train station). Looked around and couldn’t find anything. Lots of takeaways, but no supermarkets. We eventually found a little place that had weisswurst in a hole in the wall. Happy now, we stopped for a pretzel and headed down stairs to the U Bahn station. Well, there heaps of supermarkets down here……Typical. We stopped at one and got some potatoes as Seano wanted to try making bratkartoffel. We made it back to the campground as it started to rain again and thoroughly enjoyed our weisswurst and bratkartoffel and decided an early night was in order.
