So incase you were unaware, it twas my birthday today. I wanted to do something awesome, so we went to the Great Barrier Reef.

Our boat the Calypso was beautiful, in a non living boat kinda way. They zoomed us out on some fairly choppy seas to Opal Reef (one of the systems on the outer reef). Note to anyone who fancies going, do a trip from Port Douglas as we only saw one other boat all day, whereas if you go from Cairns you are going with the masses and end up on some big ass pontoon with no real chance of seeing anything interesting let alone Nemo, if you are going to do and think it will be the only time you do splash out a wee bit extra and do it properly. Anyway lecture over.

It was a 50/50 on who was seasick and who got drenched. If you were sick you were inside suffering if you weren't you were outside sunning yourself until the skipper directs the boats into a nice wave and soaks you for your trouble. I fortunately skipped both these unpleasantaries as I decided to read my book away from the partial spray before the wave struck, gave me a damn good giggle though!

So the reef was awesome... All the fish you can imagine and a few more I was never aware off. I hired an underwater digital camera thinking I was the next David Bailey, I did not bad I suppose, did I mention it was rough! At some points it was like swimming on a treadmill, but this just gave us some exercise rather than any real grievance. The giant clams were uber cool they reacted to you waving at them by promptly shutting in disgust.

At our third location we had to disembark into a rather large school of rather huge fish, quite a daunting thing since they were in a feeding frenzy due to the tasty bread that the cox (his sense of humour was some what warped) was chucking for them. So you just had to hold your proverbial balls and go for it! I did and while swimming the treadmill away, one promptly bit me, I looked round and he looked at me as if to say "What you looked like bread!". How rude!!! If I ate fish I would have had him for my tea. The pics really tell their own story on the reef...

For my birthday tea we had a tasty steak. Ending our day on the reef with a nice bit of beef!
