The strangest thing that happened was that when I had to be dropped a block from The Jane hotel due to traffic, a random guy on the street that I didn’t recognise waved at me and said “Hey! Welcome back!” Turns out he’s affiliated with the hotel… and… theme of the trip… free bottle of wine for Bee Bee. Strange. And AWESOME.
I then met the lovely Jono after his job interview and we went to an incredibly hipster rooftop bar at the Standard hotel (astroturf and sunglasses as far as the eye can see) before downing a hipster burger, saying our goodbyes and racing off to two seperate concerts.
I really am going to keep this one short. The concert was amazing, they are MUCH BETTER LIVE IF THAT’S EVEN POSSIBLE. Photos follow below…
I couldn’t sleep afterward so I went up the Empire State building (it’s open til 2am) and (theme of the trip) they let me keep my headphones ‘cos they match your nail polish’.
As I was standing on the rooftop of the Empire State (wow this sounds like the beginning of a hipster thought. They’re rubbing off on me!) listening to the audio guide about the different neighbourhoods… the ‘melting pot’ of immigrants… the land of opportunity… people chasing a better life… chasing their dreams… I got to thinking about how that’s what makes America great. It’s also what makes Australia great. Many different people come together in a sometimes messy but ultimately beautiful way. So many different ways of seeing the world and living and being.
I got to thinking about how sad it is that some people don’t value diversity. That they’re stuck in a routine they can’t deviate from. That they don’t like, desire or see the value of change. It’s a way of living and thinking that has no room for new ideas. And their life experiences will be all the poorer for it.
This really did turn into a poorly worded, clichéd, painfully hipster thought. I apologise. BUT… maybe I’m just doing some foreshadowing.
After all, I did drive to Hershey the very next day.
Ah, Pennsyl-tuckey. Stay tuned… it’s coming.
