Flag of Italy  , Trentino-Alto Adige,
Monday, July 1, 2013

Although in Italy, the Dolomite region feels more like Austria or Switzerland with a Bavarian ambiance. After breakfast of chunky bread rolls with mortadella, ham and salami with cheese (Tiff stuck to the chocolate croissant) we set off on another day of hiking, yes the boardies are still on ice. Now donned in semi-appropriate gear, we didn't invest in the full hiking boot and poles scene though they would have been handy, we alighted the Seceda cable car to the peak at 2500m. Yes back to the snowline with plenty still around after a heavy Winter here. Dolomite region is well known for its skilled wood carvers and many examples to be seen around town and throughout the mountains. The biggest and most impressive was the Christ on the cross standing at the summit, a breathtaking climb from the cable station. Beautifully carved it must be at least 12 to 14 meters high and looks over the whole valley. Canberra lies just over 15000 km from this point, not sure of the relevance but it was a little fact we learnt on a sign just adjacent
We traversed many a hill and dale today like Frodo and his companions even with obstacles blocking the path intermittently care of recent avalanches. The scenery was spectacular and the sheer harsh faces of some of those mountain sides contrasted with the rich green pastures of the high meadows- fed by an abundance of mountain streams that network the paths adding further hazard to our footing.
After a few kilometers the coffee clock was ticking and it always surprises Wendy how my legs get more focused in stride once a Bavarian hut serving delights is sighted in the distance. Fantastic coffee with gorgeous apple strudel and a view to die for. Sat there and just sucked it in. Meanwhile Wendy and Tiff had found a colony of rabbits along with goats and newly arrived kids that entertained them long enough for me to regain my drive.
Onward, upward, downward and across a few more k's to the Col Raiser cable station where we introduced Tiffany to goulash and after a hesitant start she seemed to enjoy. Looked better than my vege soup with "sausage" but the schnapps was good and warmed within.
Returned to base but it took another 7km, yes 7km walk to return to our car.
Well Tiff and I plunked exhausted on our balcony when Duracel Wendy suggested the Suisse lift was open for another hour and a half and would be a great idea to catch the afternoon sun on the eastern face of the monolith. Well this bunny wasn't budging so we fared her well as we contended with DOMS. Delayed onset muscle soreness that had the temerity to show up early. I think she has overcome that supposed fear of heights today as she flew solo up that last cable car.

Duracel Wendy - I love it! 51 years it has taken for an appropriate nickname to surface. Just imagine how much more exhausted you would have been if she hadn't spent 3 months in a brace.
The scenery looks absolutely magnificent. You may have to pack the board shorts in the day pack to justify their suitcase space.

Adrienne your probably too fit to relate to DOMS but we know it well and I hope you are celebrating with Dom P. following your recent success, well deserved.
