Christmas was not particularly Christmassy this year.

The first thing we did on Christmas eve was check out some more temples and a garden in the southern Higashiyama district. Very pretty!

While we were at it, we caught an interesting Christmas ceremony with a lot of Japanese monks and lay-people beating on drums.

(Side-note: There are sooo many stairs to climb to see all these temples!!! See attached photo of a tired Sophia climbing a particularly steep flight)

Finally, we met some nice American sailors (from a navy base in southern Japan) in a Teppanyaki bar in the evening. They were some of the few sailors I have met who are actually using their experience to see the world!

Finally, we all went to a jazz club to enjoy some red wine and camembert cheese. Nice. :-)
