The highlight of today was a delicious Kaiseki meal at Roan Kikunoi Kyoto (2 Michelin stars). The dishes proceeded as follows (some photos attached too!):

*** Amuse ***

Nanzenji Tofu, chive

*** Appetizers ***

smoked salmon camellia flower sushi, cod roe terrine, lotus root stuffed with mustard, mibuna, cured karasumi (grey mullet roe) rolled in squid, augler fish liver

*** Sashimi ***

Tai (red sea bream), cuttlefish, stream laver, fresh wasabi

Baby tuna karami daikon (Kyoto radish), ponzu soy sauce

*** Steamed ***

Wakasa Guji (red tilefish) steamed with grated kabura turnip, wood ear mushroom, lily bulb, mitsuba herb, fresh uni (sea urchin), gingko nut, fresh wasabi

*** Hot Pot ***

duck breast, Kujo green onion, duck meatballs, sancho pepper

*** Rice ***

Salmon roe rice, Kintoki carrot soup, Japanese pickles

*** Dessert ***

Hasukappu ice cream, soybean milk banana chiffon cake

Without exception, the dishes were amazing! My (Ash) favourite was the baby tuna, which was served with slightly burnt skin and was delicious and incredibly soft in texture. Sophia's favourite was the steamed dish with the red tilefish. The duck hotpot was also particularly delicious -- Kujo green onion is great! Finally, the Hasukappu icecream was scrumptious! (if we can get the berries in Australia, we intend to try to replicate it!)

Mmmm... still having day dreams about some of these dishes...

In the evening, we topped off the day by relaxing in some scaldingly hot public baths near our guesthouse and have resolved to do that much more often in future!
