After an early start in Singapore and a few hours on the plane we arrived mid afternoon in Perth and took a taxi straight into town. The first impression: warm and dry and reminds us a bit of America with the houses being mainly one story buildings with massive gardens. Might not be a surprise as western Australia is not exactly so densly populated. Although our taxi driver wasnt exactly the chatty type (and hopefully australians do live up to there reputations of being outgoing and chatty), he got us into town and dropped us off in northbridge where most of the hostels are. A bit exahusted from the heat we headed to the first hostel we found, and by the way its not eactly the Asia prices we so much got used to the past few days.. :-( so a bit different perspective here.

Maybe we where subconsiously a bit homesick but after we dropped our bags we went straight to the british pub down the road for a nice cold beer. Perth was nice but unfortunatly didnt get the chance to spend much time there as we got straight into planning our trip up north. However we did get to Fremantle, south of perth where the first prisoners where brought to Australia and spend the day around there. Another important point was our re-introduction to every traveller energy booster - peanut butter and jam sandwiches which we have been eating for the past days (yum!) and im sure we will be throughout this trip. We did however celebrate valantines day with a nice meal at a nice balcan resturant before we gave up the life of meals and luxuries for the wonderful world of budget eating... Im sure travellers can really relate to this very important moment of our trip..

The next morning we set off north with the greyhound and stopped in Kalbarri which was 7hours from Perth. Kalbarri is a nice little town and we found the YHA hostel very nice and spacious enough to cook our own meals and chill around. On the bus we met two German girls (Kalli and Lisa) with which we decided to rent a car for the day and go out in the bush.. We also meet a bunch of dudes from Perth that where travelling towards coral bay so spent the evening playing good old drinking games and having a laugh. Next morning however the girls had us up and running by 8AM which was a bit painful but we are travellers and we can handle it!!!! ha!!! We visited the National Park and took the short trekking routes to Natures window and the Z zone as the scarchinly hot temperatures and the evil and most annoying flies in the world prevented us from attemping any major hike but we did see some amazing stone formations and landscapes (a bit of a pity though that we didnt make it in high season..anyway..).

We also saw our first kangaroos..!!! woooo that was exciting... we took a walk to the local golf course and there they where just chillin''..... of course they are all over the place so dont really have to go out looking for them but was nice to see them dine in the moonlight,.... hihi romantic.

On our last day we went down the street from the hostel where they feed the pelicans every morning and had our first encounter with these birds. As a kid I (sophia) got right in front of the line to feed them and of course did the most pathetic move every..dropped the slippery fish on someones feet we had a bit of excitment there.. :-) always happy to contribute to the entertainment.

Tomorrow we are off to Shark Bay which will be another 4 hours north but so far our impressions of WA people are that they are very friendly and TALKATIVE so think we are going to definitly enjoy it here!

till next time folks

Stubbsy on

Those pink parrot things are vicious little buggers! I got bitten by one in Perth at a zoo. It came waddling up to me and stopped by my feet, looked up at me, then jumped up onto the fence next to me. It let me stroke it on the head for a little while then bit my thumb, the littel sh*t!
