Arriving in Tupiza after a long overnight bus ride from Salta and a 6am border crossing, was wonderful. The surrounding hills were incredible, great red peaks and lots of green trees. I checked into a nice hotel with a grubby little pool and promptly met two fantastic people from Liverpool, England, Roy and Jo. For lunch I ate a huge plate of pasta for 2.5 Bolivianos (8 Bolivianos to the dollar) and spent an hour an a half being not only the tallest person in the bank, but probably the richest. Don't tell SAM or no one will ever get a raise.

Later that day I was enjoying beers with Jo and Roy around the pool, sunburning my knees, when it started to hail! Weird weather.

The next day we all piled into our 4X4, which thankfully was much nicer than I thought it would be, and set off for four days of exploring the most diverse, amazing, beautiful, desolate southwest corner of Bolivia. Words can't do the trip justice. You will just have to look at the 8 million pictures that I (selectively) uploaded (oh, yes, there is more).
We went up to around 5000 meters (approx 15,000) feet and luckily I didn't feel any altitude sickness other than shortness of breath. We saw geysers and boiling mud, threw snowballs in the mountains, watched thousands of pink flamingos, baked in the sun, pointed out wild vicuņas (like small llamas), met other travelers, sat in hot springs, visited ruins, stayed in three places without heat, climbed on solitary rock formations in the desert, saw smoking volcanoes, forged rivers, licked hotels made of salt and had a fabulous time!
