Even though I was flying to India at the weekend I could not resist taking the train into Paris for a couple of days. Something about the idea of taking the Eurostar from Waterloo was appealing to me. 2 hours and 45 minutes later, voila, there I am in Gard du Nord!

The first night I spent trying to coordinate with a few acquiantances I knew at the American University but I found out the hard way that Paris nightclubs are the same as the ones in New York--hard to get into without a bevy of women in tow or a table lined up. My lack of French did not help.

The next day I went up to the Sacre Coeur in Montmartre and finding a tower to climb I climbed it for an excellent view of the city. I walked down the long stairs of the Montmartre (i never saw the funicular in the Doisneau photo...), then I meandered about the Pigalle area which reminded me of 42nd street in the early 80s. I finished at the Moulin Rouge, surrounded by the gaggles of tourist. Then i took the metro into St Germain and had a late lunch at Les Deux Magots, which I believe was across the street from the oldest church in the city and burial place of Descartes. Later that evening i went to the Opera Bastille to catch a performance of La Bayadere--especially fitting cause the following night I would be en route to Delhi.
