We were able to walk to all the main tourist destinations - some a bit further than others and tiring by the end of the day. We went to the Pathenon late in the afternnon, about 5pm. It was still very hot and the rock retained all the heat up there. We saw a lady in pointy high heels. Why, I don't know as the rock is marble and is very slippery. I couldn't believe she could stay upright in them! From there it is a short walk to Mars Hill where the apostle Paul gave counsel to the peoplle, it is marble type rock and is very slippery even dry with sneakers on but a great place to take pics
We also went to the Parliament house where there is changing of the guards every hour. They guard an unknown soldier's tomb out the front. They wear the funny looking uniforms which must be so hot as they wear thick white stockings under them so when they kick their legs up, you can't see there bits! The shoes are to die for with pom poms on the end of them. Very interesting to watch and on Sundays they wear a traditional dress uniform which is different again.
You hear many bad things about Athens, however we treated it like any other country and made sure we watched our luggage whilst travelling public transport and then around the shops and tourist destinations we had our Pacsafe handbag and backpack and never had a problem. There seem to be a number of police around the tourist areas so maybe they are addressing the problem of bag snatching. One of the biggest inconveniences is the distinct lack of public toilets! There are none, if you wish to use the bathroom you need to walk into a coffee shop or bar and use theres apparently. I was told this after commenting on it to a local shop owner. He said that if they had toilets the Greeks would go behind them and not use them anyway. My comment was that maybe they need them for tourists!
The museum is worthwhile and has heaps of interesting statues and historical pieces
Lots of tourist shops on the way to the Acropolis in the old part of town which are interesting to look in, there are also many jewellery stores as everyone needs some greek styled jewellery!
