Mekong River Slow Boat

From my journal:
The Mekong river trip from Chang Kong in thailand then to Pak Beng and into Luang Prabang was well...something to remember as a footnote to what I put up with on this trip. It sucked!! Pak Beng was a swindlers haven and home and hole to absolutely the worst this country could offer. Of course that was just my momentary reality there and didn't impede on the subtle moments of children playing and good food that were other simultaneous realities. The river boat was hard long unending with some nice views and interesting volcanic rock formations. Fishermen, children playing, women sifting, maybe for gold. Got some sleep on the second ride in the back by the loud engine with the Dutch and Swede guys (Marc, Peter - Dutch, Maricio, Flandia? - Swedes). Amazing sunset into Luang Prabang.
Oh, let's not forget getting sick before the boat. Made it over to Loas with much confusion and even missing my ride. But managed to get the visa and eventually meeting up with friends and ride to the slow boat. Almost missed that too. Through up before getting visa, and then induced it again before the slow boat...all good. I knew it was over once I finally spit up a whole undigested mushroom from Tee's cooking course the day before. The course produced some of the best curry I've ever had. I should say I produced some of the best curry I've ever had...Note to self--buy a mortar and grinder thing when back at home to make my own curry paste.
