Flag of Thailand  , Pai,
Wednesday, March 5, 2008

When asked by various people I've met her in Bangkok, where I've rounded out my SE Asian leg, what places were my favorite, invariably Pai tops that list. From the moment I entered it was like something was lifted off me or rather I was lifted. It's got a vibe that far exceeds it's hippy mountain village reputation. It's not toursity like it's made out to be. It's got it's own kind of fine intercultural tapestry effortlessly weaving the young backpacker party buzz with old world seeded travlers, the migrant hill tribe market folk and farmers, with a small but vibrant music and art scene, the implanted yoga instructors with the historically rooted massage parlors, the wickedly inexpensive river side bungalows with modern but traditionally integrated and sculpted hill side resorts and spas. And all of it is strung together through the threads of respecting the natural landscape and the mantra, "easy, easy."

I made my home here 1

. It was easy, enough Thai flavor to feel like traveling and just enough clean and comfy intenet cafes, good bakeries, and pubs to make any westerner settle in.

Ting Tong bar became my home in a home away from home. Confused by that?; so it would be Ting Tong inside Pai away from NY. I want to write more about this later so, note too self..."write more later." For now I'll just add that I pretty much spent 3 full days there, dj'ed there, made lots of friends there, and was told by the Thai owner Do that I was then family and if I ever returned, that was where I would eat and sleep for free during my stay!

The only entry from my journal: (I think I was enjoying myself way too much to make the time to sit long enough to write anything.)

Ting Tong Guys, Tay and Do is the owner, Friends lawrence, knoc, alison, ari, adriana, michelle
