-Melbourne, Melbourne, Melbourne: I could see myself living there for a spell. It was one of those places in time that just matched up with me. It all came easy. It all flowed, from conversations, to interesting people, to concerts, movie festivals, cool alleyways and trendy strips, great food and culture, roof top bars...you get the picture. Phillip Island was my nature experience with the amazingly unique Penguin Parade and the koala reserve where you can get within touching distance of the cuties in their natural habitat.

From my journal:

Feb. 19th Tues.
In flight to Cairns

Melbourne
Melbourne is the shiznit federation square
federation square
. Two days of flow. Stayed at big mainstream place but nice, Urban Central. Had the best cheap meal of my travels yet...Gourmet pizza on special for happy hour for only $5 at the Grand Royal Hotel (?) along street shops with cool Victorian iron work on awnings, along the south side of yarra river into crown casino straight into foyer and massive interactive entertainment piece for Chinese New Years. Giant lit up lanterns drop from ceiling and reveal different cultural things around holiday and massive dragon opens mouth and puffs smoke. Enjoyed river walk and skyline at night, then to China Town, then alley bar Euro Trash, cool place great drink specials, Then the Lounge and Cookie then club 6 roof top bar playing Sin City. Walked back by Casino in front of yarra and suddenly these tall massive rectangular art structures through flame bursts high into the air...cool!

Next day was SORRY DAY! Amazing that I happened upon this historic day. Celebrated with talks and honorings and music in Federation Square. Then back to hostel and met Tiffany. Hopped in the porche and off to free symphony. But not before having my first McDonald's in over 10 years. Shitty chicken wrap thing. Started coughing. Met Tiffany's dog, apartment, and musician friends.

Off to Jeanette's my couch surfing host (www.couchsurfing.com is a site designed to bring travelers together with local hosts for cultural exchange. I'd also met my Fiji hosts Peter and Suzie as well as my Auckland host Chris through it). Cool Dinner party with friends from all over the world, mostly studying at local university. Then Got flu and laid out for a couple days. Then Sustainable festival and film festival called Tropfest. Aquarium and amazing Cuddle Fish. To Phillip Island, just enough time for Penguin Parade with cool Fin and Sweden Girls and then biked to Koala Reserve with Dag from near Dusseldorf, Germany. Hostel was just my place. Amaroo YHA. great chill vibe and pool, amenities, old mystic...nice.
