I didn't think anywhere would challenge my love for Helsinki but this place has definetely given it a run for it's money.
Bergen is truly spectacular. The second biggest city in Norway it is surrounded by fjords to the west and mountains to the north, east and south. The biggest highlight though is that it is a historical city with great architectural significance. Thank God the bloody Nazis didn't destroy this town like all the others I've been to.
Everywhere you look there are beautiful old wooden buildings. Some are similar to Amsterdam it that they are crooked and leaning. The history though is everywhere. It's not just one or two streets, it's practically every street
This paragraph is from the local tourist bureau website and it sums it up well,
Bergen has given a warm welcome to its visitors for more than 900 years.
Bryggen has become a symbol of our cultural heritage and has gained a
place on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The old Hanseatic wharf is
architecturally unique and is perhaps one of the most familiar image in
all of Norway.
I got a bus transfer from the ship to my hotel, and it was similar to a quick sightseeing tour, as others were dropped off at their hotels first. My eyes were wide open from the first few seconds. I was in awe. So basically as soon as I checked into my room, I literally dropped my bags and hit the streets. It was just after 3pm and I knew I probably only had another hour of light. Thankfully the further south I've traveled the more hours of sunlight I've had to take photos
So I've walked and taken many photos and walked and tried to absorb as much of the city as I could. Kicking myself now that I'm leaving this place tomorrow morning. I easy could have spent a few days discovering more treasures.
There also is a cable car that goes up this very steep mountain to give you the most impressive views of the city. The tourist bureau again describes it best,
Take the funicular railway to Mount Fl°yen and see all of Bergen in just 8 minutes. The
funicular railway is one of Norway's most famous attractions. The trip
starts from the city centre, just 150 metres from the Fish Market and
Bryggen. The exciting trip up to the mountain is a magnificent experience
in itself. From Mount Fl°yen, approx. 320 metres above sea
level, you can enjoy the beautiful view, study the cityscape in detail
and the seaward approaches and fjords surrounding Bergen.
It really did prove to be another WOW moment!
Bergen is one hell of a fantastic city and if I ever come back I'll do it justice and stay here for a week.
