Where I stayed
Yes it's cold, really brain freezing. So started the day with a big bowl of hot porridge topped with local wild berries. Yes it tasted as good as it sounds.
First day I've had to get out the full Arctic gear outfit; thankfully I splurged on this because you really can't survive without. Only stupid thing, I forgot to put on the thermal leggings so only part of me that's frozen are my lower legs. Won't make that mistake again!
Unfortunately because it's Sunday all the places I wanted to visit are closed. Makes life difficult when you're only here for a day. Missed out on seeing a traditional Sami reindeer farm, art & craft galleries, even souvenir shops. Even had to resort to a dodgy kebab restaurant for lunch because nothing else was open
Not all was lost though. Went to a Sami Culture centre & saw interesting displays & artefacts. They also had beautiful crafts you could buy; woven wool clothing, reindeer antler jewellery, pottery, wooden objects. The things I liked though cost a lot, worth it but not in my budget.
Spent rest of the day going on a 5km walk around Inari lake. Really beautiful & peaceful. Even saw a cute squirrel running from tree to tree (too quick to take a photo). Not sure if photos worked because was already going dark. Sun never really rises high from the horizon & photo opportunities are really best between 11am-1pm.
No success with viewing the Aurora yet. Apparently they haven't seen them for over 2 weeks. Hopefully I have more chance on the cruise when I travel higher north.
