after dark on saturday dec 30, 2006, about twenty highwaymen waited in the woods along the highway and around midnight their vigil was rewarded as ten trucks loaded with precious cargo approached the waiting ambush. the highwaymen leapt into action forming a formidable barrier that completely blocked the highway. they can do this because these highwaymen are not men but wild elephants. they have a weakness for fresh fruit. the trucks were loaded with freshly harvested tropical fruits such as sugarcane and tapioca. with a great nod of their giant heads, the highwaymen turned the trucks on their side spilling their sweet cargo all over the road. they gorged all night and then in true guerrilla fashion, they melted away into the forest whence they had come. this was no isolated event. highway robbery of fruit trucks by elephants is common in certain parts of thailand during certain times of year that correspond with fruit harvests. sugarcane appears to be their favorite snack and they can apparently smell harvested sugarcane or otherwise detect its presence from a distance. the moral of the story is this. don't carry sugarcane when travelling in the woods. you might attract the wrong size of company.
