this morning i drove pencil to work and on the way back, on a crazy whim, i stopped at the sawang resort golf club for nine holes. here is how it went.

hole number 1: 370 yards par 4: two on, three putts, bogie. hole number 2: 490 yards, par 5: three on, 1 putt, birdie. hole number 3: 345 yards, par 4, two on, two putts, par. hole number 4: 165 yards, par 3, 1 on, 2 putts, par. hole number 5: 330 yards, par 4, three on, 2 putts, bogie. hole number 6: 342 yards, par 4, 2 on, 2 putts, par. hole number 7: 377 yards, par 4, 3 on, 0 putts (chipped in) birdie. hole number 8: 165 yards, par 3, 2 on, 2 putts, bogie. hole number 9: 500 yards, par 5, 3 on, 1 putt, birdie.

this was the first time in my life that i had scored below 40. feeeeeelings, wo, wo, wo, feeeeeelings.

my friend chris (swiss chris not norwegian chris nor american cris) has a 2-year-old son named jj. he is the terrorist of isaan choclec restaurant. today, 9/11/2006, he escalated his game by learning how to climb on to the customers' tables. he pushes a plastic chair backward up against the table and then, boom, just like that, he is on the table looking for ice cubes. he likes to crush ice cubes with his ball-peen hammer. why a two-year-old has a ball-peen hammer i don't know but he does have one and he knows how to use it. he also likes to make suicidal attempts to climb up on my bicycle. his weakness is cucumbers. if you are under attack, just hand him a slice of cucumber. cucumbers come first. terrorism can wait. i survived. so did my bicycle. luck was on my side. also i had lots of cucumbers to pass out. now back home and with a little bit of time to play the guitar before my afternoon nap.

my neighborhood restaurant owner had wanted to know when i would eat dinner there and i had said that i would do so when they served fish sausage. i have now been informed that they have purchased some fish sausage just for me. i don't believe i have much choice about dinner tonight.

in the bangkok post today we find that the government health department was feted by a pharmaceutical company inside the grounds of an ancient buddhist temple in ayutthaya that has been designated as a world heritage site. the party involved dining, alcohol, karaoke, dancing, the whole lot. the weird thing about thailand is that the bizarre is almost normal. had falangs done anything like this in a temple, then we would have seen some indignation. lots and lots of it, i am sure. we get yelled at just for forgetting to take our shoes off.

in the sunday bangkok post is an article by someone who is said to be an expert on islamic fundamentalism and on terrorism. he says that the war in iraq was part of america's post 9/11 strategy to neutralize islamic terrorism by spreading democracy. in fact, it is widely known, and it has been reported even in the bangkok post, that the new bush administration had already decided to go to war in iraq prior to the events of 9/11/01. one would think that experts would know stuff like that.

and that's the way it is tonight here in cha-am. so long and happy trails.
