John Muir is known as the "Father of the National Park Service". He was the country's most famous and influential naturalist and conservationist. John Muir was also an inventor, immigrant, botanist, glaciologist, writer, co-founder of the Sierra Club, fruit rancher. But it was John Muir's love of nature, and the preservation of it, that we can thank him for today. Muir convinced President Theodore Roosevelt to protect Yosemite (including Yosemite Valley), Sequoia, Grand Canyon and Mt. Rainier as National Parks.

John Muir, his wife and two daughters lived and worked in the Alhambra Valley for 32 years. The family owned 2,600 acres, of which about 2,200 were used for growing a variety of fruit. John Muir NHS acquired the John Muir mansion and 326 acres of oak woodland in 1993. This site has been open to the public since the acquisition.
