The Mission of San Antonio de Valero, otherwise known as The Alamo, was established in 1718. It was the first of five missions built in San Antonio. This is the location where a small band of Texans held out for thirteen days against the Centralist army of 2,500 men with General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in command. Although the Alamo fell in the early morning hours of March 6, 1836, the death of the Alamo Defenders, James Bowie, David Crockett, William B. Travis and 187 Texas patriots has come to symbolize courage and sacrifice for the cause of Liberty. Their memories are as powerful today as when the Texan Army under Sam Houston shouted "Remember the Alamo" as it routed Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836.
