Today we did a daytrip that really had a huge impact on us. We went to visit Terezin Czech Republic. This is where during WWII they set up a a Jewish Ghetto and prison camp. The town of Terezin was originally built as a fortress town for protection back in the 1700's, which is contradicting to what it was used as in the second world war- a prisoners camp!
Essentially Terezin was turned into a ghetto where they sent many Jewish people. It was also a transit camp where Jewish prisoners were sent before getting sent on to more devastating prisons such as Auschwitz in Poland. However they were still many deaths at Terezin due to diseases such as tyhpoid and malnutrition.
Terezin is also famously known for one of the largest sca;e propaganda scandals of the time. Three Red Cross workers were allowed to enter Terezin to see for themselves if the rumours were true of the horrible conditions of the town. However what they did not know was that their entire visit was staged and planned out. The children were told to act happy, the shelves were stocked with food. What they saw was a self-goverened ghetto. What they did NOT see was the Fortress where the prison was overcrowded, people were sick, and being tortured! The red cross workers deemed the town to be in good condition...little did they know they were being duped!!
Now there is a large cemetary outside to remember all of the people who died there. It really makes you think!
