Near the end of the plane ride some guy in my row started to say that there was a Hula contest in Hilo and all the hotels would be booked and probably all the cars too. When I got off the plane the hotel rumour turned out to be true but luckily the rental car rumour was proved to be false.
So I had to drive to Kona. On the way, not far from the airport, I saw two hippies with thier thumbs out. So I pulled over. We had just the most amazing conversation during the ride to the other side. It turned out that they were very interested in alternative fuels, religion and eating fruit
we went and had a wonderful satisfying and tasty mexican meal at tres Hombres.
then we went and slept out at a state park on the beach nearby. Only 5 dollars each.
they lent me a pad and a sleeping bag and they used a small tent they had with them.
The night sky under this huge Yes tree (referring to the painting on the Yes album cover) was amazing. I kept waking up because the ground was a little harder than my
body was used to. But each time I would just look up and there was this amazing tree and a clear brilliant night sky full of stars beyond it.
Wow, now this is Hawaii. So different from Oahu.
It's really wonderful to have such-ike hearted traveling companions. More about
biofuels and diesel engines later.
