So here I am in Auckland, New Zealand. Continent number 2. Its goodbye South America, hello Australaisa.
My biggest news so far...After grinning and bearing it for the last month, I'm so happy to say that I have been and got my mollested tooth fixed. I can smile again without looking stupid (or should that be 'feeling' stupid, before you all correct me)! It seemed sensible to wait til I got here, but then I didn't waste too much time doing seeing to it. Just gotta hope I can get the money back from the insurance now.
I arrived in Auckland at the lovely time of 4am. I had been told on the way over that the weather had been appalling, but after hanging around the airport for a few hours I was treated to a beautiful sunrise as I rode the shuttle bus into town. As I found out I couldn't check-in at the hostel until 11 and at this point it was 7, I obviously went to wander round town but then jumped on a boat across the water and ended up enjoying my first city day on a beach, and not returning to check-in until 4pm. I could get used to their bad weather.
Its been very strange arriving here after 2 months in South America. I think of how to say stuff in Spanish but there's no need, communication has suddenly become so easy. I'm back to traffic that drives on the left (though this is now confusing once again). Toilet paper...where's the little bin gone? You mean I can put in the toilet without the thing blocking. Wow!
I went with Jodie's recommendation on hostel, ACB. Its bloody huge! I thought my first one was big in Buenos Aires at 100 beds, and then I got used to places with 10-30. This ones got 500!! Scary. Hot water though, wahey.
Auckland's a really nice city, as soon as I arrived I was thinking this is the sort of place I could live. London life has always kinda scared me, too claustrophobic and chaotic, but at 1.4 million people as opposed to 20 million, I think I could cope with somewhere like this. City life when you want it, but beaches and green stuff 10 mins away. Aaahhh nice.
After 3 days here, I have now been joined by my Uncle Pete, and we're gonna tag along together for the next couple of weeks. It should work out well as we are hiring a car, so hopefully thats really gonna open the place up to us. Plus its thankfully going to save me a fair whack of money on the expensive bus ticket you otherwise have to have here.
Well I'm off to explore this beautiful country now in whats going to seem like luxury I reckon after what I've become used to! Happy days...
