Show trip route
Cusco is a really cool place, there seems to be a lot going on, and a lot to see and do. In Inka time it was the capital city of their empire and hence, there is plenty of history on show and ruins scattered all over the local lands.
On one trip out to see some ruins at as place called Pisac, we had planned to head back into town via a selection of closer sites after a bus ride back. We managed a couple before the light started to fade though, and then found ourselves walking in the cold and dark, being passed by a succession of locals in their cars giving us very odd looks
This is only really appropriate for those who have seen the Motorcycle Diaries, but there is a scene in it where they are wandering around Cusco being given a tour by a young boy, who comments on the Inca built wall, comparing it to the opposite wall which they say was built by the ´Inca-pables´ (i.e. the Spanish). Well I found myself being given a similar sort of speil on our first day by a couple of kids, but all the time I´m looking at this lad, thinking I recognise you, then he says it was him in the film. I wandered off because you are constantly getting hasseled in this way, but afterwards I realised I should´ve got him to sign my book, that´d be quite a cool thing...never did see him again though. Mind you I dread to thing how much he would´ve charged me, they´re astute business people the kids here.
One of the things I am enjoying most about being in Peru is the move away from the European feel of Argentina and Chile. I won´t say I didn´t feel like I was travelling, but I hadn´t yet got that feel of being in the complete unknown, far from home. Here though its very different, the skin of the people is a lot darker, and there is traditional dress and unusual smells everywhere. There is also new food, and on one evening Mike decided he would try the local speciality...Guinea Pig. What we weren´t expecting was how it would come - lets just say, not a lot is left to the imagination! (See pictures above).
