On the final full day of our voyage we were lucky enough for the morning clouds to clear, allowing us to jump ship at Puerto Eden. This a small community completely cut off, whose only interaction with the outside world is their twice weekly deliveries on the Navimag ship. After 2 days on board, everybody sure seemed pleased to be able to stretch the legs a little, and see this mish-mash of boldly coloured little iron houses.
A little further on, with the sun only just retaining some light in the sky, we have the great opportunity of sailing up to the Pio XI Glacier. Apparently this is the biggest glacier in South America. It makes for an impressive sight.
For our last evening we were to have a party to celebrate the end of the voyage. Prior to this there would be Patagonian Bingo!!
The only difference with this game from ours, as far as I could see, appeared to be the use of a card with windows that you close when you get the number. So the game starts. It seems to be taking a while for somebody to get a line, then "Bingo"...its me. Reluctantly I stand and have my card checked, at this point I´m told it is customary that I have to dance. I believe some of my fellow passengers now felt relief at their bad fortune, and relished in jeering me on, with calls to "get ´em off" from a certain Dutch contingent!
I do my bit, receive a map and take my seat, I believe a little red in the cheeks. The game continues. "Bingo". Oh hell, its me again. I once again stand, this time more prepared for the rituals, and as many people know, I´m not usually one to back down from dancing and decide to show our guide how its done...gyrate my dear!! I this time receive a calender for my troubles.
Once again I sit. As the numbers are called, I have two lines where I only need one number to complete them. One of them comes up. Oh God, I can´t go up again, thats ridiculous. I throw my board at Annalise sitting next to me, who promptly throws it back. From behind Zoe offers to take it on. With pleasure. After all my success, I am a little miffed to find that the following winners all get a bottle of wine...huh!
The party afterwards is great - so cheesy. Now I have been to my fair share of ´Skool Discos´ back home, but this is actually like a genuine school disco, one from when you were 12, its great...plus you can drink alcohol this time around!
Leaving the boat the next day actually feels a little odd, we have been on it all of four days, but in that time you end up getting quite close to your fellows shipmates. Not to worry, we dock in little Puerto Natales and seem to fill the town. Passengers are everywhere, and we all end up meeting for Pizza that night.
