I say today was the best day ever, but I am sure there are a few more days like today to come! Today we had a relaxing breakfast and chilled out at the pool until 11am when we were picked up for our transfer to Sigatoka River. We took a one hour bus trip into the Sigatoka Valley, which is South East of Nadi. We stopped for 20 minutes to collect our sarongs and water. All ladies in a Fijian village must have their legs covered hence the need for sarongs.
Then we jumped in our jet boats and took the exhilarating 20min high speed ride down the beautiful Sigatoka River. On the trip we passed children swimming, mothers washing, farmers farming and horses grazing. We stopped now and then to hear about the use of the valley, it is predominantly farming with all children having to go to school from 6-19 and swimming across the river and back every day to get to school with their bags in a bucket!
On arrival to the village we were met by our guide who advised us of the protocol. No shoes, no hats, men must enter and leave the buildings first etc. It was all very interesting.
First off we experienced a kava ceremony with the elders of the tribe. We listened to them sing and speak and then we were all given some kava (including the kids) it tasted like muddy water...after the ceremony we were given a tour of the village. The local kids were so cute and so excited to have us there. The tours the jet boat does, rotate every 6 months between 14 villages to spread the gifts people bring and a percentage of the ticket cost goes to the village.
Then we were welcomed with song and lunch in a traditional style in one of the community huts. Followed by a lot of dancing where the elders showed us how to dance like them and we showed them how we dance. So much fun, even Crispin wiggled it with the local girls! The kids were so excited to have all the local kids come and waltz with them...soooooo cute!!
Then we said our farewells and jumped back on the boat for our trip home. The trip home was a little less sedate with at least six 360 spins thrown in! We all got wet but laughed and screamed all the way home. There was an amazing part where we came across two boys swimming their horses across the river, we did a spin right in front of them, the boys raced their horses onto the bank and galloped bareback down the river bank chasing the boat. The kids were maybe 8 or 9! So cool!
A late arrival back home straight to the restaurant for dinner and to bed. A great day to be remember forever.
