Bergama
Entry 24 of 34 | show all | print this entry |
The bustling market town of Bergama is most famous as the home of the Asclepion. The Asclepion is an ancient medical centre which came to the fore under Galen (AD 131-210) who set up shop as a physician to the gladiators. Apprently he became world renowned and his knowledge of nervous and circulatory systems remained the basis for Western medicine up until the 16th century. As for the town, Bergama is much less visited than Ephesus and that is what is nice about it. The village has a very laid back feel, is very friendly and we liked it immediately. We stayed ýna typýcal guest house wýth a lovely famýly and are actually sorry to leave...but ýt ýs on to Selçuk whých wýll be our base as we explore Efes for a few days.
