Canakkale is a harbour town in the Gallipoli region that is a stopover for all the groups visiting the battelfields and memorial sites.  It is also popular as a base for visiting Troy, one of Turkey's World Heritage sites, which is what we are doing.

For anybody who has ever read Homer's Iliad or heard the tales of the Trojan wars, this is the place to visit!

It is a tricky site to understand (we need Judy J!) because excavations have revealed nine ancient cities, built on top of each other and dating back to 3000 BC.

Sadly, one of the first things we encountered when we got to the waterfront for a sunset, was what people have actually referred to as the Brad Pitt horse.  (This is the replica of the Trojan horse built for use in the movie, Troy.)
Thank goodness, after that, the sunset was very worthwhile, absolutely beautiful reds, oranges, yellows radiating across the harbour.

We'd need Judy J to explain everything well...but basically the story of a wooden horse has never really been proven as far as we know.  However, there are several theories on the purpose for building such a massive object...for example, for use as a battering ram.  The story itself is based on Greek mythology...that the Trojan wars started due to the abduction of Helen...
The bottom line is that to be here brings the story, whatever it is, to life!
